How the fees work
Square charges a flat 1.75% on in-person UK card payments, covering chip and PIN, contactless, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The entry reader is 19 pounds plus VAT, the cheapest mainstream option, and the free plan has no monthly fee or contract.
Costs rise off the in-person rate: online is 1.4% + 25p, keyed-in and invoice payments are 2.5%, and non-UK cards add 1.5% in person. Square charges no chargeback fee, which is unusual, but newer accounts can face fund holds.
The 1.75% rate does not fall with volume unless you qualify for custom Premium pricing (around 200,000 pounds a year in card turnover).
